Dance paintings
There is a long and continuous history of the involvement and link between artists and dance.
I have always been interested by the works of Degas, who spent much time painting dancers and musicians in rehearsal and in production.
Of late, my artistic influences have swerved from a youthful enthusiasm for the impressionists to a fascination for artists such as Klimt and the world of the Secession.
I’ve visited the Secession building in Vienna a couple of times now.
The place with its golden dome and the Beethoven frieze within, has a kind of magical hold over my imagination.
The paintings below are all a result of the kindness and generosity of the Choreographers, producers, dancers and musicians involved, who have all been extremely patient with me.
The Dance companies listed below have been extremely helpful to me, resulting in my being able to make the paintings above.
I have listed the companies in chronological order – the order in which I became involved with them.
During 2023, I followed the rehearsals of Roma, a contemporary dance production choreographed by the talented Anthony lo Giudice.
I found the combination of Graceful and Rhythmic movement in time to music to be almost hypnotic.
It was my contact with this production that got me interested in the possibilities of making images from dance.
For three days in 2023, I was involved with Talented dancer Beth Veitch’s lighthouse project – which resulted in some of the paintings above.
I have followed NEDP training and rehearsals from September 2023 to date.
During 2025, I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend rehearsals and audition sessions with Northern Dance.
The encouragement and help that I have received from Northern Dance has been invaluable.
